FMC WIGGINS CHURCH HISTORY

In Wiggins, MS in 1902, 4 families came togther to form a new congregation of the Methodist Episopal Church South denomination. As it was called , the Wiggins Methodist Church received their first pastor in 1904. They purchased the lot on the corner of Pine Avenue and Iowa Street, where they erected their first church buildling . The 60 foot by 30 foot church house cost approximately $5000.

By 1922, The Wiggins Methodist Church was home to over 200 members. In 1939, the Methodist Episcopal Church South merged with the Methodist Episcopal Church and Methodist Protestant Church denominations of The Methodist Church. The congregation built a new brick church home in the same location in 1947, adding lovely amber stained glass windows in 1950, and air conditioning in 1952.

An education wing was added to the church in 1958, and the current parsonage - across from the church on Pine Avenue - was purchased in 1967.

In 1968, the denomination of The Methodist Church merged with The Evangelical United Brotherhood and together they formed The United Methodist Church. First United Methodist Church of Wiggins was a part of this new denomination.

They continued in vibrant ministry, adding a Family Life Center in 1999, and a new office and youth area in 2017.

In 2023, the membership of the church - close to 400 people by this time - discerned, along with thousands of other United Methodist congregations aroundthe world, that in order to remain connected to their conservative, traditional, Methodist roots and beliefs, the time had come to disaffiliate from The United Methodist denomination.

Desiring to maintain their Methodist heritage and connection, the church elected to become a part of the rapidly-growing Global Methodist Church denomination and to take the name First Methodist Church of Wiggins. This body of believers rejoices to continue the 120 years of Christ-centered ministry that was started by those faithful four families in 1904.
